Ford F Series Hybrid

Ford has announced that it is entering an agreement with Azure Dynamics Corporation, a global recognized name in the progress and production of hybrid electric and electric components and powertrain systems for commercial vehicles, to integrate its proprietary plug-in hybrid (”PHEV”) technology into the highly popular Ford F-Series Super Duty Trucks by early 2013.

The F-Series, with over 50 percent market share in the North American market, currently offers several gasoline and diesel engine options. The new PHEV technology will provide consumers with powertrain options that are both environmentally friendly and fit the user’s driving needs. In other words, the F-series will become greener and more fuel efficient.

Ford seems to have got its timing right as well. With substantial growth in the cab and chassis market expected over the next five years, some experts say as much as 50 percent, operators looking to replace their outdated fleet will benefit from fuel efficiency savings without sacrificing performance. Seems like Ford has found the right opportunity and intends to move quickly and smartly to reap the benefits.

The Honda Insight is a hybrid launched in direct competition with Toyota’s widely successful Prius, which has sold over one million units already. Honda’s new Eco Assist System helps manage better mileage for drivers and claims to be an intelligent system that learns with time. All three models of the Insight are cheaper than Toyota’s comparable Prius models and according to Honda, saves substantially more on fuel costs. The Honda car game requires players to blow into a mic plugged into your PC to increase or decrease the speed of the car depending on the incline the car is travelling on. Mercedes Benz, the luxury car manufacturer, has 26 mixed tape collections available for free download on its website! And there’s a new mix out every two months. I had no idea. The retro, nostalgic title and a shortage of fresh tunes were enticement enough for me to download the latest compilation two nights ago. No regrets. I’ve been listening to it continuously since, drifting into imaginary scenarios of driving by the ocean with the top down - pretty far from reality. The tracks cater to an assortment of moods and tastes including groove, jazz and ambient. It’s well worth the twenty to thirty minutes it takes to download.

Volvo’s racing simulation game based on Concept S60 is available for free downloading and you can find the link on the Volvo site right after the flash intro. The second global competition starts on 10th June and anyone can participate (first prize is a set of Pirelli tires). Due for release in October, the 2009 Aptera 2e rolled out its pre-production model in the US this month. Despite appearances, the Aptera has an exceptionally sturdy body and its aerodynamic shape ensures minimum drag. It runs on a lithium-based battery designed to charge using an ordinary electric outlet and gives an average of 100 miles per charge. The Aptera can hit 0-60mph in 10 seconds with a maximum speed of 90mph. With its reasonable price and a substantial amount of bookings already in place, Aptera has the potential to be trendsetter in a recently ‘carbon-emission’ conscious US.

Jay Leno, car fanatic and talk show host, took the 2009 Aptera 2e for a test run and spoke to Paul Wilbur, Aptera’s CEO and President, about the technology, aerodynamics and energy saving features of the car. The video below also shows Leno driving the Aptera up to a speed of 70 mph on the California highway.
