Buying a home alarm system is like buying an automobile. There are many different alarm systems to meet a variety of requirements. Regardless of the size of the residence or your personal requirements, there are several factors to be carefully considered before purchasing any alarm system.
* The quality of an alarm system is basically determined by the manufacturer and the manner in which it is used. You may find a very inexpensive “Brand X” system but will the manufacturer or distributor be around to repair it if necessary? Alarm systems are electrical and mechanical systems and subject to periodic maintenance.
* Buy an alarm system to meet your needs. A basic system consisting of a control panel and two door contacts will not meet your requirements. Each system should be uniquely designed for your residence.
* An alarm system that does not terminate at an alarm central station is basically worthless. You cannot depend on others to voluntarily notify the police in an emergency. An alarm central station has the responsibility of monitoring the system and dispatching appropriate agencies as indicated by the type of alarm received.
* Each alarm system should have a battery backup system in the event of a power failure. A cellular telephone backup system will allow the system to function when the normal telephone circuit is interrupted.
* Smoke detectors should be a part of any alarm system. The expense of integrating smoke detectors into the system is very insignificant when the cost of a delay in reporting a fire is considered.
* A multiple option control system should be considered to allow some alarms to be activated in the residence while other alarms are deactivated. For example, this system allows activation of alarms in one section of the house and deactivation of the alarms in the master suite.
* Remember, an alarm system that is not used consistently is of no value.
